How to Successfully Implement WMS — Part 1: Preparation

Researchers at Gartner® studied warehouse management system (WMS) implementations and highlight that while the benefits of a WMS can be considerable, organizations that haven’t fully prepared can face significant challenges.

This report — the first in a series of four — reviews the key factors that supply chain technology leaders should focus on to plan and deliver a successful WMS rollout.

How can you ace your WMS rollout in advance?

    Key findings

    • Infrequent warehouse management system (WMS) implementations in companies often leave supply chain technology leaders inexperienced and not fully aware of the impacts and the necessary changes they must make to successfully deploy a new WMS.

    • Unclear responsibility for deliverables and insufficient commitment from the WMS purchaser frequently culminate in project failure when obstacles surface.

    • Inadequate delineation of a WMS implementation plan and spending (plan vs. budget) heighten the likelihood of project failure due to deficient management, unfinished tasks and communication gaps. This results in unaddressed warehousing needs and processes.
